Four council training modules, developed by the Council Leadership Development Committee, are available for downloading the the Missouri Extension Council website.
Modules were developed by teams of county extension council members and UO/E faculty and staff. Each module includes a council handout, a list of additional resources, trainer notes, a council activity and a PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes.
The modules, the first of several to be developed, are:
1. Be an Effective Council Member.
2. Recruiting Candidates for Effective County Councils. Includes talking points, a timeline for recruitment and elections, a recruiting flyer that can be customized to each county, a consent form for nominees and a news release template.
3. Mastering the Nuts and Bolts of Council Elections. Includes a timeline for recruitment and elections and a sample notice of nominees.
4. Understanding County Budgets and Fiscal Reports. Includes 2004 council funding guidelines, a sample monthly financial statement and budget overview, "Safeguarding Cash: Special Controls Checklist," and county annual report guidelines with checklist.
Each county office will receive two paper copies of the modules -- one for the county program director and one for the council chair or training committee chair. Councils who would like assistance in delivering the training modules can contact the Regional Council Leadership Teams, which received training on the materials during October, says Bev Coberly, co-chair of the Council Leadership Development Committee.
Revisions to the New Member Orientation Manual will be coming in early 2004, based on evaluation results and organizational changes. Rick Mammen and Joan Robison co-chair the Council Orientation Subcommittee.
The annual UM Alumni Alliance Legislative Day will take place Feb. 25, 2004, in Jefferson City. County extension council members are invited to participate by visiting legislators and sharing their messages about the value of the University and of the extension program in their communities and lives.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. Council members may then make visits to legislators, carrying with them an invitation for the afternoon reception. The optional awards luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. at Capitol Plaza Hotel. Those attending Legislative Day may choose to participate in the Rotunda activities without cost; those participating in the awards luncheon will be charged $18 for the cost of the meal. From 3-5 p.m., the legislative reception will be in the third floor of the Rotunda.
The campuses and UO/E will be invited to set up displays that have connections to the life sciences and demonstrate value of local programs. The staffed displays in the Rotunda will give volunteers opportunities to interact with legislators as they go to and from their offices and committee meetings.
Registration details will follow in subsequent issues of Weekly News.
