University of Missouri Extension professional associations honored colleagues at a joint awards ceremony during the Missouri Galaxy Conference Nov. 11 and 12.
University of Missouri Extension Association
The University of Missouri Extension Association Rookie of the Year Awards
recognize new extension employees for outstanding achievement. This year’s
recipients are Wendy Flatt, CM livestock specialist; Tom Fuhrman, NE human
development specialist; Mary Ann Patten, CM 4-H youth specialist; and Dinah
Peebles, SC ag business specialist.
Meritorious Service Awards were presented to Linda Rellergert, EC nutrition and health education specialist, and Virgil Woolridge, CM business and industry specialist.
First place in the Innovator Award category was presented for Step Up to Leadership, a leadership development curriculum developed by Johanna Reed Adams, state community leadership development specialist, and Miranda Duncan, EC community development specialist. Second place was given to the Southwest Region News Service managed by David Burton, SW civic communications specialist. Third-place was presented for Brochures and Flyers That Get Attention, an online inservice education offering developed by Sandra McKinnon, EC consumer and family economics specialist, and Eileen Yager, extension communications officer.
Epsilon Sigma Phi
The Alpha Tau chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi presented the Visionary Leadership
Award to Tom Henderson, interim vice provost and director, for development of
new programs and revenue sources, empowering staff, increasing accountability
and ensuring timely decision making.
Sherri Helm, administrative associate, received the Meritorious Support Award for work with MU Extension’s business development program, and McKinnon received the Outstanding Regional Faculty Award for innovative local programming.
The Team Award was presented to the Southwest Region News Service. Recognized were Eldon Cole, Gary Naylor and Dona Funk, livestock specialists; Dave Whitson and Gordon Carriker, ag business specialists; Gaylord Moore, horticulture specialist; Jinny Hopp, human development specialist; David Burton, civic communication specialist; Rick Mammen, regional director; Ed Browning and Bob Schultheis, natural resource engineering specialists; John Ezell, Byron Morrison and Renette Wardlow, 4-H youth development specialists; Chris Dean, Tri-Lakes TCRC coordinator; Annette FitzGerald and Janet LaFon, consumer and family economics specialists; Terry Egan and Tammy Roberts, nutrition specialists; Donna Chilton, environmental design specialist; John Hobbs, Wesley Tucker and Tim Schnakenberg, ag and rural development specialists; Stacey Hamilton and Tony Ricker, dairy specialists; Tom Hansen, agronomy specialist; Betty Lorton and Tom Keohan, business and industry specialists; Teresa Inman, Greene County administrative assistant; and Greg Horstmeier, Extension and Ag Information news director.
Missouri Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
The Missouri Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences presented its
Professional Achievement Award to Betty Reinsch, EC human development
specialist. Lynda Johnson, WC nutrition specialist, received Missouri and
national Distinguished Service Awards.
Kris Jenkins, WC human environmental sciences specialist, received a Communications Award in the newsletter category for Silver Threads. She also finished first place in the Central Region awards. The Florence Hall Award was given to Jinny Hopp, SW human development specialist, who was a finalist in the Central Region awards.
University Extension Community Resource Development Association
The University Extension Community Resource Development Association presented
Distinguished Service Awards to Barbara Cunningham, WC business and industry
specialist, and Tish Johnson, EC community development specialist.
The Friend of Business and Industry was given to Morris Hudson, director of the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers. Janie Dunning, community development director for USDA Rural Development, received the Friend of Community Development Award.
Missouri Association of Extension 4-H Youth Workers
The Missouri Association of Extension 4-H Youth Workers presented its
Achievement in Service Award to John Ezell, SW 4-H youth specialist. Kim Mehl,
WC 4-H youth specialist, received the Distinguished Service Award; Pat Wood,
Linn and Livingston counties youth program assistant, received the Outstanding
YEA Award; and Frank Wideman, SC natural resource engineering specialist,
received the Clover Colleague Award. The Missouri 4-H Foundation received the
Friend of MAE4-HYW Award.
Twenty-five year service awards were presented to Ina Linville, state youth development specialist; Donna Mistler, SC 4-H youth development specialist; and Jo Turner, 4-H youth development program director.
Three MU Extension faculty members were honored at the campus Faculty Recognition Banquet Nov. 3 in Columbia.
Von Pittman received the Donald W. Fancher Provost Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension and Continuing Education. The award recognizes the University’s outreach function and individuals who serve citizens throughout the state. Pittman has been director of the Center for Distance and Independent Study since 1997. Under his leadership, CDIS created MU High School and a bachelor of general studies degree-completion program.
Richard Houseman, assistant professor of entomology and state specialist, received the Provost’s Award for Creative Extension Programming by New Faculty. The award recognizes extension faculty members for exceptional accomplishments in their first years of service at MU. Houseman joined agriculture and natural resources extension in 2000.
Also recognized at the ceremony was Jerry Hitzhusen, associate professor of recreation and park administration, who received the C. Brice Ratchford Memorial Fellowship in May.
