Missouri Foundation for Health funds diabetes prevention grant

"Jump Into Action," a program to help prevent Type 2 diabetes in elementary school children, will reach 40,000 fifth-grade students in 25 counties during the next three years, thanks to a $690,699 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health.

Teams in 300 schools, consisting of the school nurses, physical education teachers and classroom teachers, will use a curriculum developed through the Baylor College of Medicine and the Texas Department of Health Diabetes Council to improve children's knowledge and behaviors to prevent diabetes. Using a train-the-trainer approach, school teams will be trained by representatives of the UO/E Nutritional Sciences Department at UMC; the Department of Health and Senior Services' Missouri School Age Children's Health Services Program; and the Missouri Association for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Curriculum training will begin in February 2004.
