UMEA plans Missouri Galaxy Conference

The University of Missouri Extension Association, in cooperation with the professional associations, will host the Missouri Galaxy Conference, Nov. 18-19, at Windermere Conference Center, Lake of the Ozarks.

The two-day conference will feature a poster session, breakout sessions, association award presentations and meetings and keynote speaker Cathy Newton, former educator and Platte County extension council member. Newton, who will speak at the opening luncheon, is the author of "Risk It! Empowering Young People to Become Positive Risk-Takers in the Classroom and in Life" and "It Takes Character," a self-help book for teens. She opened a speaking and consulting business in 1992.

On Tuesday afternoon, there will be a variety of breakout sessions on faculty and staff benefits, estate planning, family emergency preparedness, building positive risk-taking skills for youth, ice breakers and group activities, avoiding conflict and presentation skills. Associations will host evening banquets, followed by the "Extension Idol" talent contest.

A poster session on Nov. 19 will showcase projects and programs. For more information, contract Lynna Lawson via e-mail or at (573) 756-4539.

The conference is supported by University Outreach and Extension, the Missouri Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and UMEA.

The conference is $30 for both days or $20 for one day. Conference participants also can renew their UMEA and association dues when registering. Lodging is $80 per room; up to six people can share a room. Conference information is available on the UMEA website.

Individuals are responsible for covering the cost of their participation in the conference. Participants do not have to take official leave to participate.

Members were Barb Casady, Missouri 4-H Foundation development director; BJ Eavy, EC community development specialist; Sherron Hancock, EC consumer and family economics specialist; Tish Johnson, EC community development specialist; Lynna Lawson, EC 4-H youth specialist; Ina Linville, MU extension 4-H youth specialist; Michelle Taylor, WC associate 4-H youth specialist; and David Whitson, SW ag business specialist.

Applications accepted for North Central NELD

Applications are being accepted for the North Central National Extension Leadership Development program. UO/E will select two individuals to participate the North Central NELD class, which begins in January 2004.

NELD is designed to build leadership within cooperative extension, and to provide current and future extension leaders with vision, courage and tools to lead in a changing world. During 2004, individuals will participate in four seminars to:

  1. Explore their own leadership abilities and potential
  2. Develop skills in building effective teams
  3. Learn how racial, ethnic and cultural difference can expand opportunities to meet the needs of today's rapidly changing population
  4. Identify and weave future trends into effective work environments.

CHART offers free grant-writing workshop

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is offering Competitive Grant Writing Concepts, a series of free workshops available through CHART -- Community Health Assistance Resource Team. One-day workshops will be held Oct. 30 in St. Louis, Nov. 7 in Kansas City and Dec. 8 in Jefferson City.

The workshops focus on how funding teams can increase an organization's capacity. Topics include how to explain return on investment when preparing grant applications, fallacies that can limit funding potential, strategies to increase funding capacity and roles of funding teams. Presenters are John Gulick, CHART public health manager, and Carey Kaltenbach, assistant chief of DHSS's Bureau of Grants and Administration.
