Policy
UM and UO/E non-discrimination statements changed

On Oct. 16, the UM Board of Curators approved an amendment to the University's non-discrimination policy to add "sexual orientation" to the list of employee and student classifications protected from discrimination.

The language was changed in response to requests from faculty, staff and students to explicitly cite "sexual orientation" in University policies. The 1999 "Maintaining a Positive Work and Learning Environment" policy had been interpreted to extend prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation, but it did not cite specific groups for protection.

Beginning immediately, all UO/E printed and electronic publications should carry this non-discrimination statement:

University Outreach and Extension does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability or status as a Vietnam-era veteran in employment or programs.

Newsletter, letterhead and fax coversheet templates containing the new statement may be downloaded from the Graphic Standards website Individuals responsible for maintaining county and other websites should be sure that the non-discrimination statement is updated.

Printed materials, such as letterhead, may be used until existing supplies are depleted.

This policy will be carried out in accordance with the action of the Board of Curators.
