Welcome to Crystal Weber, Gene Schmitz and Jane Mandel, who joined University of Missouri Extension Oct. 11.
Weber is a community development specialist-local food systems for the Kansas City metropolitan area. She will work with producers, community groups, grocers and restaurants to develop rural-urban linkages and provide technical assistance to entrepreneurs. She received a master’s in public administration from MU in 2004 and a bachelor’s in agriculture in 2001. She has studied agriculture in northern France, Thailand and the Czech Republic.
Before joining MU Extension, she worked for a Columbia insurance agency and completed an internship with the Missouri Biotechnology Association in Jefferson City. She also has six years of experience managing a 150-head cattle operation in Steelville.
Schmitz is a livestock specialist headquartered in Warsaw with responsibility for educational programming in Benton, Cooper, Moniteau, Morgan and Pettis counties. He returns to MU Extension after nearly two years with Colorado State University Cooperative Extension as a local livestock agent. From 1995 to 2003, Schmitz was a livestock specialist for Mercer, Grundy, Livingston and Caldwell counties. He worked in Reynolds, Iron, Madison, Wayne, Butler, Carter and Ripley counties from 1992 to 1995.
He earned a master’s in animal science from MU in 1989 and a bachelor’s in animal science from Kansas State University in 1982. He is a member of the American Society of Animal Science.
As a grant writer, Mandel will work with extension program directors and others in developing grant proposals to support educational programs. Mandel worked as a grant writer and project coordinator for the MU computer science department, beginning in 2003, where she worked on proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation, USAID, NASA and the National Institutes for Health. Her background includes work as a technical support project leader and computer programmer/analyst.
Mandel earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from MU in 2003. She also holds a bachelor’s degree from Central Missouri State University.
