Six communities selected for
Project Family Support
Six Missouri sites have been selected for Project Family Support, which is designed to empower communities to develop projects that support families.
Each of the six sites -- Putnam County, Noel, Neelyville, Mountain View, Jennings and Covenant Community Development Corp. of Columbia -- received $11,000 to use in developing family resources specifically needed for that area.
Project Family Support is administered by ParentLink and supported by an anonymous donation to the Missouri 4-H Foundation. Now in its fourth year, the project has helped more than 30 Missouri communities get a start on community centers, create after-school learning programs, and initiate youth-at-risk prevention programs across the state.
Grants are available to Missouri 4-H and FFA clubs for community development projects through the Missouri Department of Agriculture.
The deadline for applying for 2004 grants is Nov. 1.
The grants, awarded through the Building Our American Communities grant program, enable young people to earn work experience and build civic relationships. The agriculture department will award $36,000 for community projects, such as renovating community shelters, building picnic areas and beautifying local buildings and grounds.
To be considered for a grant, the proposed project must benefit an agricultural community and promote community development. Project must be completed by Sept. 1, 2004.
A maximum of $500 per club will be awarded. Applications are available from the Department of Agriculture. Applications must be postmarked by Nov. 1. For more information, call the agriculture department at 573-751-5618.
Brenda Procter, MU consumer and family economics specialist, and Renette Wardlow, SW 4-H youth specialist, were quoted in the September 2003 issue of Missouri Ruralist. The article, "A Call for Help," reported on special programs to help rural families trapped in domestic violence.
