New staff/programs broaden urban extension from UMSL

New leadership for programs in local government, crime victim assistance and the environment is adding to the urban extension outreach from UM-St. Louis.

Julie Stone, who previously was director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources St. Louis Urban Outreach Office, is providing leadership for the Local Government Management and Leadership Partnership through the Public Policy Administration Program. The partnership includes the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council as well as UMSL and UO/E. Programs will focus on training for mayors, city managers, city council and alder persons, and other public officials. Stone plans to create a one-stop shop and clearinghouse of information for local government. She will begin work in the St. Louis area and then expand the program statewide via ITV.

Stone can be reached at her East-West Gateway office, 10 Stadium Plaza, St. Louis, MO 63102; phone: (314) 421-4220 or (618) 274-2750; fax: (314) 231-6120; or at UMSL; 8001 Natural Bridge Road, 406 Tower, St. Louis, MO 63121; phone: 314-516-4585; fax: 516-5210.

Marcellete Barren is the project coordinator for the new Missouri State Victims Assistance Academy. Funded through the U.S. Department of Justice, the academy will be one of 12 centers nationally, established to serve the needs of service providers and crime victims. The academy will offer credit courses and CEUs as well as general training and education. Eventually, the academy will offer licensing to agencies dealing with crime victims. The academy will deal with victims of any crime, but focus is likely to be on sexual abuse and domestic violence.

Barren can be reached at (314) 516-7363.

James Wilson, formerly a Missouri Department of Conservation employee, has been employed to develop research and educational programs at Forest Park. A $92 million renovation program, funded by an E. Desmond Lee endowment and community fund raising, is providing resources to upgrade Forest Park facilities, restore a waterway and wildlife, and develop curriculum for a teachers academy in the park. A new visitors' center, to open in November, will include classrooms, and the park will be the backdrop for environmental, experiential education for elementary and middle-school youth.

Wilson can be reached at (314) 516-5973.

New UMSL Chancellor Thomas George joined the UO/E Program Leadership Council via ITV and said extension provides vital interaction among the campus, the community and the state. He said, "Often more innovative ideas come out of extension," so he will depend on extension for greater outreach in the community.
