Teachers hear about HES programs

SW Region and MU campus extension faculty members showcased outreach and extension programs at the Missouri Educators of Family and Consumers Sciences annual conference, July 21-23, in Springfield. More than 400 teachers attended the conference.

Jim Wirth, SW human development specialist, presented a concurrent session, "Diversity Challenges for Schools."

Teachers had an opportunity to talk with Gail Carlson, MU extension health education specialist; Kim Leon, MU extension human development specialist; Sharon Stevens, associate director of the Missouri Textile and Apparel Center; Annette Fitzgerald, SW consumer and family economics specialist; Terry Egan, SW nutrition specialist; and Jinny Hopp, SW human development specialist. Displays promoted Missouri Saves, Building Strong Families, Families and Divorce, Focus on Kids, Missouri Families, the Missouri Textile and Apparel Center, Family Nutrition Education Program and Health for Everybody.

Thirty-nine teachers signed up to receive the Missouri Families e-newsletter. Many already receive it. "Two of the teachers I talked with had examples of how they use the newsletter with their family and consumer sciences classes," Hopp said. A teacher from Trenton High School uses the newsletter for assignments in which students read and summarize articles.
