University Outreach and Extension showcased educational programs during a retreat of U.S. Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families employees, July 24, in Kansas City.
"What we discovered is that our highest-priority programs in 4-H, HES and community development were in alignment with their highest-priority programs," says Pat Sobrero, associate vice president for university outreach.
Among those priorities: fatherhood, healthy marriages, community-based initiatives, positive youth development, strengthening rural families and communities, and the next phase of welfare reform.
The Administration for Children and Families is responsible for federal programs that promote the economic and social well being of families, children, individuals and communities. The Kansas City regional office serves Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska.
Sobrero and System Program Director Julie Middleton started the presentation with an overview of University Outreach and Extension. They were followed by Jo Turner, 4-H youth development program director; Jo Britt-Rankin, MU interim associate dean for human environmental sciences extension; Judy Stallmann, MU professor of ag economics and community development; and Dolores Arce-Kaptain, director of Alianzas. WC Region director Al Black and Carol Mertensmeyer-Ryan, ParentLink program director, also attended.
"It was truly an honor to be invited to spend 90 minutes showcasing UO/E's high-performing programs during their retreat," Sobrero says. "I will work with Linda Lewis (ACF regional administrator), and together we will enable program champions with ACF and UO/E to schedule informal discussions on next steps."
