To ensure access to printed MU guides, Extension Publications has instituted a charge structure for guidesheets distributed to county extension centers and campus departments. The charges reflect only the real cost of printing and distribution.
"While this change is primarily related to ongoing budget reductions, it has the benefit of leading to better decision making. The demand for printed guides has always been high, but it is difficult to put a value on them if they're free," says George Laur, publications coordinator for MU Extension. "This will help resolve the budget issue and provide real feedback on value."
The policy goes into effect today, July 25. Charges are based on 6 cents per page for bulk orders, which represents a 50 percent discount off the cover price. All charges and discounts will be displayed on the Extension Publications online ordering system used by county extension centers.
With the new policy, offices will have access to printed guides that are of higher quality than those from a laser printer or photocopy machine at a cost competitive with photocopying.
"This charge will keep the guide series available in print through Extension Publications as long as there is demand," Laur says.
Guides will continue to be available from the web. "Our move to the Web has dramatically increased our accessibility in recent years, and more people are accessing MU Guides now than at any time in our history," Laur says.
