'Best of the best' to be featured in e-Extension

On the horizon for extension nationwide, including UO/E, is a web-based information and education system called e-Extension. Being formulated in partnership with CSREES and the land-grant system, e-Extension will serve current and new customers.

Steve Wyatt, system program director for information technology, says e-Extension will be both "high-tech and high-touch." It will offer learners opportunity to access the "best of the best" educational information and materials that the 76 national extension institutions have to offer in a format that will be easily accessible. The website will include frequently asked questions, "ask the experts," decision tools, interactive multimedia learning modules, and advanced search and retrieval functions. The e-Extension effort will support county and state websites.

Content on the site will be peer reviewed by national teams. Content will be organized around lifespan events -- such as home buying, parenting and retirement. As the parameters for participation emerge, more information will be provided. "In the meantime, it will be worthwhile for field and campus specialists to think about which curricula might be prime candidates for national distribution," Wyatt says.

Wyatt is serving as the North Central Region's contact with the initiative. Pat Sobrero, associate vice president; Wayne Moore, SC Region director; and Al Black, WC Region director, also are giving leadership from Missouri. A project management website at Mississippi State University offers more information about e-Extension.
