Diagnostic services changes implemented

University Outreach and Extension's diagnostic laboratory services for plants, soil and nematology have been combined. Manjula Nathan is the director of Soil Testing and Plant Diagnostic Services. Laura Kabrick coordinates the plant diagnostic clinic; Bob Heinz coordinates the plant nematology laboratory.

Lab operations will remain the same; however, administrative and fiscal functions have been combined. "The reorganization will result in a more efficient and cost-effective functioning of our service labs and clinics," says John Gardner, MU associate dean for research and outreach in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

A new fee structure has been in place since Jan. 1. Identification services for plant disease (except golf turf), insects, weeds and digital images submitted via the web are $15. Disease identification fees are $10 per test. Detailed information about fees is available on the web.

"Regional faculty should feel free to offer any and all diagnoses and recommendations that fit within their expertise, just as before," Gardner says. "If a problem cannot be handled locally, the next step is to inform the client that the clinic has a service for a fee."
