County councils and staff have planned a variety of events to celebrate University Outreach and Extension Week, May 18-24.
UM President Floyd will participate in open houses in Kirksville and St. Louis. On May 20, Dr. Floyd will participate via interactive video in an open house at the Kirksville Telecommunication Community Resource Center. He will be joined by Executive Vice President Ron Turner. Dr. Floyd will hear from four TCRC patrons and have the opportunity to talk with them about their experiences. During the open house, Kirksville Mayor William Murray will present a proclamation to the TCRC. The Adair County outreach and extension council also will present a Certificate of Appreciation to the Adair County Commission.
On May 21, President Floyd will attend the St. Louis County open house, which will be from 3-7 p.m. St. Louis County Executive Buzz Westfall will present a proclamation during the event, which will feature displays and other information about local educational programs. Missouri House and Senate resolutions honoring UO/E will be presented by Rep. Pat Yaeger and Sen. John Loudon.
Cape Girardeau
County Extension Council President David Ludwig
presented the county commission with a certificate
of appreciation, May 15. A news release about UO/E
programs, including local staff's work in
organizing and supporting the Community
Organizations Active in Disaster, was distributed
to local media.
Camden County
An open house will be held from 12:30-4:30 p.m.
each week day. Visitors will receive information
packets on popular topics such as lawn and garden
care and canning; $1 off soil testing; and free
pressure-canner gauge testing. Ken Apperson and
Lake Area Master Gardeners will operate a
gardening hotline. County commissioners signed a
proclamation recognizing the impact of local
extension work on May 9. Faculty and staff also
have distributed "Extension Firsts"
placemats to senior centers and restaurants, and
"We Bring It All Together" puzzles to
schoolchildren in conjunction with the Family
Nutrition Education Program. Council members,
armed with UO/E information packets, will embark
on an "Each One Reach 10" campaign
throughout the county. In addition, local
newspapers and three lake-area chambers of
commerce have received news articles about
extension week and local educational programs.
Clinton County
Council, faculty and staff members will host a
picnic on the Clinton County Courthouse lawn, from
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., May 22. Farm safety
demonstrations will be offered every 30 minutes
during the event.
Jasper County
More than 600 tri-fold brochures, featuring
information on local educational programs, were
mailed to people throughout the county. During
extension week, faculty, staff and council members
will hand-deliver the brochure to businesses and
offices around the square in Carthage.
Madison County
Outreach and extension week kicks off today, May
16, at the first annual Senior Citizen Day.
Extension gift baskets will be among the door
prizes. Council member Jane Kapitsky begins her
radio interviews for the week on May 19. Sonic
Drive-In will salute past and present Madison
County extension council members with advertising
on their marquee and a discount for council
members and their families. Newspaper articles
highlighting extension will hit the newsstands on
May 21, and people who visit the office will
receive punch, cookies and coffee. Every fifth
person will receive a goodie basket. On May 22,
council members will set up a display table, and
on May 23, faculty, staff and council members will
thank the community for its support.
Washington County
Cancelled in February due to bad weather, the
Washington County extension council will host its
annual dinner May 20. As part of the ceremonies,
Ron Turner, executive vice president, will present
a 50-year service award to Genelle Cole, who is
retiring as county secretary.
