Councils, staff make plans for UO/E Week

County extension councils, faculty and staff are putting together plans for University Outreach and Extension Week, May 18-24, developing events and activities to "Communicate Value and Make Connections."

In Kirksville and St. Louis, UM President Elson Floyd will participate in events. The Kirksville Telecommunications Community Resource Center will celebrate its fifth anniversary with an open house, May 20. President Floyd and Executive Vice President Ron Turner will participate from Columbia via interactive video. The event will demonstrate how the TCRC partnership has expanded educational opportunities for northeast Missourians. As part of the ceremony, the mayor of Kirksville will sign and present a UO/E Week proclamation.

Floyd will be the guest of honor, May 21, at the St. Louis County outreach and extension center open house in Clayton. Stakeholders, community leaders and program participants are being invited to the event.

In Greene County, University Outreach and Extension is co-sponsoring a workshop on Missouri's Open Meetings and Records Law for journalists, public officials and residents, at 7 p.m., May 12, at the Library Center in Springfield. "Getting the Whole Story: A Guide to Using the Sunshine Law" is co-sponsored by the Missouri Press Association, Public Relations of the Ozarks and the Southwest Missouri chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

On May 19, UO/E and the Society of Professional Journalists will host three public issue forums on "News Media and Society." The two-hour forums will be held at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Library Center in Springfield. Participants will explore ways to restore public trust in the news media.

In an effort to reach new audiences, UO/E Week and educational programs will be marketed to MU alumni. About 600 alumni in southwest Missouri will be reached through e-mail. Other extension offices wanting information on MU alumni living in the county should contact Sandy Stegall, extension communications coordinator.

UO/E Week resources available on the web

A sample letter to the editor, written by Atchison County Extension Council Member Mary Salmond, is available on the UO/E Week website. It is one of many resources available to assist council members, faculty and staff in planning events for the week. The website contains ideas for "Communicating Value and Making Connections" with stakeholders, the media and new audiences, as well as increasing the knowledge of current UO/E program participants.

The following resources may be requested from Extension Communications free of charge:

Send UO/E Week event information to Extension Communications

Extension Communications is compiling a statewide calendar of University Outreach and Extension Week events to be posted on the web. Events also will be reported in Weekly News. Send information on events and proclamation signings, etc., to Extension Communications via e-mail or to 817 Clark Hall, Columbia, MO 65211. Include copies of flyers, brochures, news releases, invitations, etc.
