The outcome of funding for higher education, including the University of Missouri and University Outreach and Extension, will not be known until the end of the legislative session on May 9, at the earliest, according to Ron Turner, UM executive vice president and director.
The Senate Appropriations Committee yesterday signed off on a series of budget recommendations that would reduce higher education's appropriation between $39 and $74 million. The range is due to the fact that the committee approved two budgets. One is based on existing available revenue, which would mean a larger cut, while the other assumes that some new revenue might be found to lessen the blow. If the smaller cut results, it would mean a loss of about $19 million for the UM System. The Senate will take up discussion again next week, and it is possible that the Governor could veto the budget and call a special session to reconsider the budget in June.
The Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education passed a resolution denouncing further cuts to higher education and calling for revenue enhancement measures
