MU Nursing Outreach and Distance Education will host "Moving Research into Practice: Chronic Disease and Missouri Women," May 12-13 at the Reynolds Alumni Center.
The conference, which kicks off National Women's Health Month, is co-sponsored by the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the MU Center for Gender Physiology and Environmental Adaptation.
Day One opens with a keynote address by Wanda Jones, deputy assistant secretary for health with the HHS Office on Women's Health, followed by a plenary panel discussion and breakout sessions focusing on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and lung cancer. Speakers will provide national and state perspectives on research and prevention programs about each of the three diseases.
Day Two focuses on chronic diseases and special issues and populations in Missouri, including mental health, aging, African-American women and women living in rural areas. Andrew Balas dean of St. Louis University School of Public Health, the featured luncheon speaker, will discuss issues in the translation of research into programs and practices. The final, crucial piece of the conference is workgroup sessions in which participants come together for in-depth discussions related to applying the information presented during the conference in their own practice. The conference will end with a plenary session during which each group will report its comments, concerns and recommendations to the conference body.
Registration fees are $30 per day, or $50 for both days. Students and retired persons may attend at no cost.
