Changes in penalty mail processes announced

Extension Publications has assumed responsibility for distribution of penalty mail supplies. The change was made to improve administrative efficiency following the retirement of Derald McLane who handled penalty mail requests.

Ordering will be handled via the web through the Extension Publications county order webpage,. Campus offices should e-mail Extension Publications or cal (573) 882-7216.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has notified University Outreach and Extension of upcoming changes in Official "Penalty" Mail policies. The following guidelines take effect Oct. 1:

In the meantime, UO/E will deplete its current supply of envelopes and other supplies. Counties should continue to use and order penalty mail items as needed. To prepare for the upcoming changes, county offices should review renewal dates and cancellation clauses in current contracts for current postage meters, and contact vendors about options for converting penalty mail meters to commercial mail meters.

The recently announced changes are part of planned overhaul of the penalty mail system. "We expect to have more information in April," says Rhonda Gibler, administrative management director. "We will share additional information as we receive it."
