The Howell County annual meeting, March 6, had an unusual twist. Annual meetings normally are a time for extension councils and staff to recognize support by county commissioners and others in the community. Instead Howell County elected officials turned the tables, preparing and serving the meal to 75 people.

"Howell County extension has appreciated support from the commission for a number of years, but we are especially grateful for this unique expression," says Brenda Bell, SC human environmental sciences specialist.

At the 2002 annual meeting, Presiding Commission Larry Spence told council members that he and his fellow commissioners would be willing to cook for the group. The cooking crew was made up of Spence and wife Linda, Northern Commissioner Robert Vaughn and wife Judy, and Southern Commissioner Mark Collins. They were joined by head chef, County Assessor Daniel Franks, who prepared smoked brisket and pork loin.

"This demonstration of commitment goes well beyond the county funding requirements," says Executive Vice President Ron Turner. "It is a strong statement of appreciation for outreach and extension programs and staff, council members and volunteers in the county."

Firefighter memorabilia, lent by West Plains Fire Chief Joe Auffert and wife, helped set the theme for the evening. Guest speaker Eric Evans, UO/E Community Emergency Management Program coordinator, presented a program on UO/E's role in assisting communities prepare for emergencies, as well as about the programs offered through the MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute. He was joined by the fire department mascot, Spot the Fire Dog, who made a guest appearance.

The council announced Mike Boyle of Willow Springs as the Leader's Honor Roll recipient. The council also recognized outgoing council members, Donna Thompson of Mountain View and Bob Peterson of Willow Springs. New council members Matt Pendergrass and Jerry Orchard were sworn in.
