The New Member Orientation Manual for county outreach and extension councils is on its way to county council chairs and county program directors. Materials also are available on the extension council website.
The manual was developed by the Council Leadership Development Committee - a partnership of the Missouri Extension County Council Leadership Council and University of Missouri Outreach and Extension.
"Training new council members with accessible information is critical to the mission of University Outreach and Extension," says SW Region Director Beverly Coberly, who co-chairs the Council Leadership Development Committee. "Effective county councils are a prerequisite for an effective local extension program."
The manual includes introductions to the county council and University Outreach and Extension, and information on Missouri's Open Meetings and Records Law. A section of icebreakers and warm-up activities can be copied and used by the council chair at meetings.
Members of the Orientation Subcommittee, which put the manual together: Co-chairs Rick Mammen, SW agronomy specialist, and Joan Robinson, MECCLC representative; Pam Crass, SC 4-H youth specialist; J.C. Owsley, retired agriculturalist; John Tharp, MU extension community development/water quality specialist; Jim Thompson, SC ag business specialist; and Eileen Yager, UO/E communications officer.
The Council Leadership Development Committee also is developing a series of "just-in-time" training opportunities to help council members learn more about such topics as program development and governance.
