The Missouri turfgrass extension program is helping to lead a change toward environmentally friendly practices through reorganization and new program offerings, says John Gardner, associate dean for research and outreach at the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.
Barb Corwin is now state specialist for turfgrass and ornamental pathology and management. Two programs provide educational and technical expertise to the turfgrass industry -- Sports Turf AdvanTage (STAT) and MU Mobile Turf (MOTurf).
"The turfgrass industry has been confronted with increasing numbers of users and increasing environmental scrutiny," Gardner says. "There is growing need for improved education and better management of home, municipal, sports and golf turf.
Brad Fresenburg, MU extension associate and research associate, leads Sports Turf AdvanTage, a program he developed. Fresenburg is available to consult with school districts on turf renovation, maintenance, playability and safety. Regional specialists can request Fresenburg's assistance in conducting local workshops.
MOTurf, developed by Corwin, is designed to provide diagnostic and problem-solving skills to golf course superintendents to reduce the use of unnecessary inputs. Corwin is available to assist regional specialists with workshops on turfgrass disease identification and management.
Soil testing, and plant analysis and diagnosis are key components of STAT and MOTurf. Services are available through the newly reorganized Soil Testing and Plant Diagnostic Services.
