Second 4-H Day with the Cardinals set for May 3

Plan now to join 4-H members, families, alumni and friends from Missouri and Illinois, May 3, for the second 4-H Day with the Cardinals. More than 40,000 fans are expected to be on hand at Busch Stadium when the Cardinals play the Montreal Expos at 1:10 p.m.

"The 4-H Cardinals Day is becoming a 4-H tradition in Missouri and Illinois," says Jo Turner, Missouri 4-H director. "Families want and need wholesome family recreation, and what could be better than a day at the ballpark? More importantly, 4-H Cardinals Day celebrates the thousands of young people, volunteers and parents who are a part of 4-H."

Last year, more than 2,800 4-H supporters from around the state attended the 2002 event, "I was extremely proud to see such a great turnout of 4-H families last year and hope we can do that again this year," says Rhonda Shafer, EC 4-H youth specialist. Shafer and fellow EC 4-H youth specialist, Dave Hileman, are co-chairing the 2003 event.

A raffle will be held to raise funds for 4-H scholarships. Last year, nearly $5,300 was raised. Individuals who donate are eligible to win the honor of throwing out the first pitch (4-H members only are eligible for this honor). Six winners will be selected to watch batting practice. Additional prizes include game tickets and autographed baseballs.

Pre-game activities include an on-field parade by 4-H members and club leaders and recitation of the 4-H pledge. 4-H attendees also will be welcomed on the scoreboard and on KMOX Radio.

Tickets are $18, which includes a Terrace Reserved seat and a t-shirt designed especially for the event. T-shirts will be available in three sizes this year: youth large, adult medium and adult X-large. Fans 15 and younger will receive free pennants from the Cardinals.

Ticket order forms have been distributed to 4-H staff and are available on the web. Families and county groups that wish to sit together should submit their orders as a package. Orders must be postmarked by March 10 and mailed to: Rhonda Shafer, University Outreach and Extension, 880 W. College, Troy, MO 63379. For more information, contact Shafer.
