Letter from EVP Turner: Governor's message favors higher education

Dear Colleagues:

You probably have heard or read news coverage of the Governor's "State of the State" message earlier this week. The Governor's budget includes no core cuts for higher education or UO/E. While that is very good news and represents the Governor's recognition of the value of higher education as a key component in Missouri's economic future, the state must determine how to avoid a projected $1 billion drop in state general revenue in the fiscal year that begins on July 1, 2003.

For the current year, the Governor has emphasized his intention of shielding higher education and UO/E from budget cuts in the current fiscal year. To avoid these cuts, the state must find revenue totaling $350 million to balance the FY03 budget. As these plans move forward, I will keep you informed. Meanwhile, we are reviewing the latest budget proposals and the UO/E budget situation as we await decisions from Jefferson City.

The next several issues of Weekly News will include status reports on budget balancing alternatives and initiatives with potential benefits for UO/E programming. To help keep you up to date on these matters, we will continue to add information to the UO/E budget website. The FAQ page at this site provides a mechanism for you to forward questions and comments directly to me and to others in the weeks to come. I welcome and value your perspective and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, again, both for your continued commitment to high-quality, learner-centered programming and for your efforts to communicate clearly the value and impact of UO/E programs.

With all best regards,

Ron Turner
Executive Vice President and Director
