Individuals with diabetes in eight Missouri counties will benefit from improved health by expanding the educational endeavor to southern Missouri. The expansion of Diabetes Today is funded through a contract with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. (See related story: "Strategic partnership efforts yield results.")
The $36,624 grant is the result of UO/E efforts to develop strategic partnerships with state agencies, says System Program Director Julie Middleton, who is the project manager. The project is a partnership of the health department's Missouri Diabetes Control Program and UO/E to work with Heart Health Coalitions in five counties initially.
The three-session series will be expanded to Butler, Carter, Reynolds, Ripley and Wayne counties during the initial stages with the potential for expanding the program to Howell, Oregon and Shannon counties.
Diabetes Today is designed to decrease hospitalizations, deaths and costs due to diabetes and complications, and increase flu and pneumonia immunizations among people with the disease.
UO/E will provide oversight, support and evaluation for the project, and will implement the "Dining with Diabetes" curriculum. The coalitions will deliver other curriculum components.
Visit the grants and contracts website for information about other UO/E grants and contracts.
