The 2003 Master Wildlifer Shortcourse, Feb. 4-March 18, will offer landowners and land managers the opportunity to learn how to enhance wildlife habitat in forest, farm and urban settings.
Seven three-hour sessions will be broadcast live via satellite, from 6-9 p.m., at more than 30 sites in Missouri. Participants will receive a comprehensive reference manual and speaker notes.
Topics to be covered include the management of bobwhite quail, cottontail rabbit, mourning dove, Eastern wild turkey and white tail deer. Separate sessions include management of wetlands, waterfowl and farm ponds, managing for wildlife diversity and developing recreational opportunities.
Local teams of wildlife biologists and other specialists will participate to help relate the information specifically to Missouri, says Bob Pierce, MU extension wildlife specialist. "They'll be at most locations to answer questions and be involved in the program."
Pierce said the foundation of wildlife management is "to understand the life cycles of the plants and animals. There has to be an ecological and biological basis for management decisions. You'll be learning the biology of species like white tail deer and wild turkey: What does it eat? Where does it nest?"
The program will be hosted in Adair, Atchison, Boone, Buchanan, Butler, Callaway, Carroll, Cape Girardeau, Clay, Dekalb, Dent, Douglas, Franklin, Greene, Henry, Howell, Jasper, Lincoln, Livingston, Marion, Morgan, New Madrid, Osage, Perry, Phelps, Ripley, Saline, St. Charles, Ste. Genevieve, Texas, Vernon, Warren and Webster counties. A few sites might conduct the program on a tape-delay basis. For more information, log onto Master Wildlifer website.
Cost of registration for the entire program is $75, or $15 per session. Sponsors include University Outreach and Extension; the School of Natural Resources and Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Missouri Department of Conservation; and USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service.
