Decorative cloth pumpkins

Materials needed:

  • Newspaper for pattern
  • Scrap material (4 pieces at least 7 ½ in. x 7 ½ in. each or 15-in. fabric (Halloween or Autumn) at least 15 in. wide
  • Dried pumpkin stem
  • Batting
  • Therm O Web HeatnBond Tape (3/8 in. wide) for ironed seams or thread to sew seams
  • Tread
  • Adornment for top (berries, ribbon, leaves, raffia, dried flowers, nuts)


  1. Draw a 15-in. circle on newspaper and cut out. Use this as your pattern. Four different material patterns\colors may be used or two or one. It’s your choice! If using four different materials, place folded 15-in. circle in fourth, place on material and cut out.
  2. Join the four pieces together with 3/8 in. HeatnBond Hem Tape to form a circle. 
  3. Baste around circle edge. This will be used together the top of the pumpkin.
  4. Pull basking stitches, leaving approximately 1-2 in. to place batting in fabric.
  5. Continue inserting batting until pumpkin is full. Work with batting until a full pumpkin shape.
  6. Pull basting stitches taunt and tie off.
  7. Hot glue pumpkin stem to top, either on the gathered fabric or on the top of the batting.
  8. Decorate pumpkin as you desire.
