Agriculture  in Texas County

Texas County is 755,000 acres in size, and with a population of just over 22,000 people, much of our largely rural county is devoted to agriculture - primarily related to livestock production.  Currently Texas County has more beef cows than any other county in the state with 46,000 head, and is ranked 4th in all cattle and calves with 91,500 head.  The county is home to 7600 head of dairy cattle and approximately 100 dairy operations. The dairy industry supports 225 jobs, and produces an economic impact of over 19 million dollars.  This livestock population generates over $36 million in cash receipts annually, 94% of the total farm cash receipts.

There are nearly 1500 farms in Texas County, and the vast majority of operations are family farms.  Few row crops are raised, but a great deal of forage is harvested as hay and silage.  The average size of a farm here is just less than 300 acres, but over 450,000 acres are devoted to farming.  Texas County's livestock agriculture combined with our quaint towns, beautiful timber and natural rivers makes it one of the most rustically beautiful counties in the state.
