Monthly Gardening
Tips
| January
| Use
Christmas tree boughs to mulch garden perennials.
| February
| Put
your houseplants in the bathtub and treat them to a gentle
shower.
| March
| Start
seeds indoors for tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and flowers to
plant outdoors by mid-May.
| April
| Prune
lilacs immediately after they bloom. If they need drastic
rejuvenation, cut back one third of the oldest, thickest stems
to 8 inches.
| May
| Keep
asparagus harvested for continued spear production. Control
asparagus beetles as needed.
| June
| Plant
pumpkins now to have Jack-o-lanterns for Halloween.
| July
| Divide crowded iris and daylily clumps after they have
bloomed.
| August
| Sow
seeds of beans, beets, spinach, and turnips now for the fall
garden. Spinach may germinate better if seeds are refrigerated
for one week before planting.
| September
| Autumn is a good time to add manure, compost, or leaf
mold to garden soil to increase organic matter content.
| October
| Continue watering your garden, especially evergreens,
if soil is dry.
| November
| Fill
bird feeders to attract chickadees, nuthatches, and juncos.
Not only will they brighten the landscape, they will also
clean up insect larvae and eggs on trees and shrubs.
| December
| Water
houseplants with tepid water. Cold tap water may shock plants.
