Difficulty:
Fairly Easy
Details: The
swift waters of the East Fork Black River flow through a
canyon like gorge called a "shut-in" in the 8,670-acre
Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park. There is a scenic
overlook trail that takes you up to a beautiful view of
the shut-ins. There is also a 2.5 mile loop past the end
of the scenic overlook, but this is not recommended for
families with small children. The scenic overlook trail is a
combination of paved trail and 166 wooden steps
ascending the steep terrain. Small children will require
very close supervision, but the man-made trails make it
possible for most people to get up to the overlook. Many
people choose to spend the day relaxing on the rocks and
swimming in the shut-ins. This is the perfect place for
a family day trip, but parking is limited so make plans
to arrive early during the summer months!
