Garden Guidelines

Here are some suggestions from our horticulturist, Anne Gachuhi, if you are lucky enough to be able to grow some of your own produce.

Tomatoes to can or freeze. Paste types are used for making catsup, paste, sauces and canning. They have thick flesh and reduced amounts of pulp, fewer seeds and make thicker sauces.

  • Roma tomatoes (e.g. La Roma ) 

  • Italian golden Roma

  • La Rossa

  • Rutgers

  • Plum tomatoes (e.g. Plum Dandy)

  • San Marzano

  • Amish Paste 

  • Viva Italia hybrid

  • Napoli

  • Opalka - heirloom variety

  • Principe Borghese

  • Ropreco Italian Paste Tomatoes – American Heirloom

  • Tomatillos - frozen fresh.

  • Giant Valentine

  • Tuscany

Strawberries to can or freeze.

  • Fern - canning

  • Lassen - canning

  • Honeoye - canning

  • Guardian - canning

  • Robinson - canning

  • Tioga - freezing

  • Fort Laramie - freezing

  • Ozark Beauty - freezing, canning

Strawberries best suited to Missouri.

  • Earliglow - freezing 

  • Redchief - freezing

  • Surecrop - freezing

  • Allstar - freezing

  • Tristar - freezing
