Timely Tip #38

Eat a Handle food safely to prevent foodborne illness.

The best way to protect yourself and your family from foodborne illness is to apply safe food handling practices every day. Here are my top eight tips:

  1. Wash hands before handling any food including ice.

  2. Wash hands, utensils, cutting boards, platters, counters—anything which has been in
contact with raw meat, poultry, fish, eggs, before using it for cooked foods or foods which will be eaten without cooking.

  3. Keep perishable foods cold until ready to cook or eat. Perishable foods include raw or cooked meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cut fruits and vegetables.

  4. Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator.

  5. Cook foods to recommended temperatures and serve immediately.

  6. Cool foods quickly in ice bath or refrigerator. Do not leave on counter to cool.

  7. Wash all fresh produce before use, including those you peel before eating.

  8. When in doubt, throw it out!
