Healthier Trick or Treating
Below are a few of the alternatives to candy listed on “Healthy Treats: Alternatives to Candy!” For a copy of this handout, send a SASE to Healthy Treats, University of MO Extension, 260 Brown Road, St. Peters, MO 63376.

  • Temporary tattoos or stickers

  • Small plastic spiders or ghosts

  • Super bouncy balls

  • Colorful pencils, erasers, pencil toppers

  • Spooky plastic rings or false teeth

  • Bracelets

  • Hair accessories

  • Snack-size bags of pretzels or crackers

  • Mini boxes of raisins

  • 100% juice boxes

  • Sugar-free gum

  • Crayons

  • Whistles

Consider giving the smallest size candy bars if you wish to give candy.
Special tips for parents:

  • Make sure children eat a healthy meal before trick or treating.

  • Check collected foods before allowing children to eat them.

  • Set limits on how much candy and when children can eat it.

  • Insist that eating sweet treats is followed by tooth brushing.
