Southwest candidate forum draws a crowd

July 19 candidate forum

Ten candidates for Missouri’s District 7 Congressional seat participated in an open forum in Springfield, July 19, sponsored by the regional MU Extension council and the Mizzou Alumni Association.  The event was covered by Springfield and Joplin media.

About 350 Southwest Missouri residents turned out the evening of July 19 to hear 10 of 11 candidates for the District 7 congressional seat respond to questions concerning their stances on a variety of issues, including higher education.  The forum, held at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, was sponsored by the MU Extension Southwest Regional Council and the Mizzou Alumni Association.

The purpose was to provide both District 7 residents and candidates an unbiased forum in which to exchange information and to learn about each other.  The event also included a showcase of University of Missouri Extension program displays.

The first hour of the two-hour program was broadcast live by KOLR-10 and KSNF television of Springfield and Joplin; the second hour was streamed live on the TV stations’ community Web portal. The entire forum also was aired on KWTO radio.  Mike Peters, St. John’s Mercy Health System vice president, served as moderator.

One Springfield resident following the forum said: “The University of Missouri Extension Service is such an important link between research and knowledge and the people who live in Missouri. I was reminded last night of how extension has grown to meet the needs in today's world. I thought the forum was great. Please pass on my appreciation to all of those involved in the event.”
