Sustainability is a topic that is receiving a lot of buzz lately. Simply stated, "sustainability" recognizes that one generation can use the ecosystem to meet its needs without affecting the ability of future generations to do the same.

As we compare the earth’s population to America, we see a world struggling to achieve our lifestyle while lacking the resources to succeed. The rest of the world sees that our country uses the earth’s resources at nearly 12 times the rate of the least developed countries.

Simple ways to make a difference and set an example for family and community:
S REDUCE what you use, REUSE what you can, RECYCLE when done.

S
Change a light. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are a safe way to save 75% on home lighting.

S Drive less. Encourage walking, trip planning and carpooling. Also, check your tire pressure regularly.

S Use less water and less hot water. Set the water heater at 120° and insulate the water heater and pipes. Switch to low-flow showerheads and faucets. Be sure to repair leaky faucets and toilets.

S
Plant trees. Trees are great family gift opportunities for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. Planting trees with children can give them lifelong memories, while creating a place to revisit and share with their own children.
S
Get a programmable thermostat. These "set back" the temperature when you are away or asleep,
saving you money and energy.

S Eat local food. Food from your garden or from the local Farmer’s Market saves on transportation, supports your neighbors and gives you the chance to get outdoors.

S Talk about sustainability. Discuss the topic with family, church members, friends and neighbors.Your opinion and actions can lead to a legacy for your family’s future generations.
