The youth program in Shannon County consists of many programs. Some of these are
offered in the schools and some are offered in different settings. There are many
programs available, some of the following are the most popular.
Agriculture and You
consists of "Hamburger Trail"
where students follow the path of food from the farm to the table, seed planting projects,
and tours to local farms to see crops and animals. One of the favorites is the
Buffalo Tour. There are various tapes that can be used in the classroom also.
Basics of Babysitting
A six part course for beginning
babysitters. A panel of presenters gives the workshop for those who want to learn about
safety, meals and snacks, keeping children occupied with games and learning ideas, and
what to do in an emergency.
Character Counts
An education program that promotes
higher standards and ethics. This program can be incorporated into any school,
business, or organization. Training for the Character Counts program is
available.
White Oak Camp
Youth camp open to youth ages 8-16 that
takes place in June of every year. It is funded by United Way to help provid an
overnight camping experience. Older students help as cabin counselors, life guards,
and game leaders, gaining leadership experience. The younger children work on life skills,
team cooperation, healthier eating habits, and personal achievements.
