Shannon county has two main industries - timber and tourism.   It has 636,400 acres making it the second largest county in Missouri.   Tourists come to Shannon County for the woods, rivers, wild horses, and arts & crafts.  It is the perfect place to get away.  The Missouri Dept. of Conservation owns 21% of the land, US Forest Service, Dept. of Agriculture has 11.7%,  Private Forest Conservation has 14%,   3% is owned by National Park Service/Dept. of Interior, and 1% is taken up by highway and road depts..  There are lots of places to go camping, swimming, canoeing, and fishing.

Shannon County hosts numerous sawmills making a variety of products from locally harvested timber.  There are several precision metal milling (CNC) plants making a variety of parts for industry outside the area.  And the apparel industry has a presence in the county making ready-to-wear garments and accessories.
