Shannon County is in the south central part of the State of Missouri.. It has a land area of 642,000 acres. With 424 farms listed in 1992, 69,176 acres were farmed full time and another 45,293 acres were farmed part time. In 1996 16,500 acres were harvested in hay. There were 20,000 cattle,350 milk cows, and 2,100 hogs & pigs in 1997.Shannon County's largest industry is the locally harvested timber. Sawmills and processors are producing ties, pressure treated wood, charcoal and hardwood flooring among the more popular products. Major portions of the timber land is held in public ownership (approximately 240,000 acres or more than 37% and harvesting is limited by public policy. Privately held forest lands are concentrated in a relatively small number of owners, with one person holding approximately 90,000 acres in a forest conservation classification.
