Risk Management and Soil Improvement through Cover Crops

Row crop and vegetable producers are looking for sustainable ways to improve soil fertility and tilth without having to rely on costly nitrogen fertilizer as their main source of plant food. Green manure crops have been used for decades as a means to increase soil productivity through fixing of atmospheric nitrogen. These cover crops promote soil tilth, organic matter, soil microbial action and natural fertilization. An understanding of how this can be systematically incorporated in present day farming operations can reduce overall production cost and increase environmental integrity.
