Putnam County's Master Gardener program began in January of 1998. It
is part of the state-wide volunteer training program conducted by University
Extension. The Master Gardener program is designed to help county extension
centers and communities meet the demands for consumer horticultural information.
The Putnam County Master Gardeners took 15 weeks of classroom training on a wide
array of subjects, coordinated by the county office staff with the assistance of
state extension specialists and others. After this initial classroom training,
they volunteer hours of community service in various ways.
Putnam County's
class had twenty-nine (29) members who continue their training updates
on a quarterly basis. They have continued to work on various community projects
throughout Putnam County. Some of the projects they have worked on include planting and caring
for the flower boxes around the courthouse here in Unionville, landscaping at the school and
Division of Family Services office, planting flowers at the city parks/fairgrounds, answering
garden and horticultural questions at several county events, and beautification around city hall
just to name a few. They assist the Extension Office in answering individual's questions also. If
you are interested in learning more about the program here, contact our office. If you are
