What is 4-H?
4-H
in Putnam County (as in the rest of the country) is an
educational program that teaches essential life skills to those kids who are involved in it. However, if you ask the kids that are in it, to them it's just plain fun!
4-H
is one of the educational programs that is
a part of University of Missouri Extension and the Putnam
County Extension Program. Below is a list of some of the things that 4-H is:
- 4-H is a family and community effort that supplements the
mission of the home, school, and church for developing our youth.
- 4-H is family oriented, group focused, and volunteer operated (yes, we are always
looking for people to volunteer their time assisting young
people).
- 4-H emphasizes subject matter related (foods,
livestock, computers, etc.) projects and activities that utilize resources from Extension and the
University of Missouri as well as other land-grant Universities.
- 4-H structures learning activities based on knowledge from the social and
behavioral sciences in order to promote those involved to acquire life
skills (leadership, character, public speaking, working together,
problem-solving and others).
- 4-H provides kids and adults the chance to assist their community in a
variety
of ways (cleaning up and painting fairgrounds and parks,
caroling at Senior Centers, etc.) that help them learn about what being a member of
society entails.
- 4-H is an informal educational program that involves both kids and adults and is
lots of fun as well.
