The 4-H program
in Putnam County is very diverse. One of our newer programs is the School Enrichment Program.
These programs are designed to work with our school and teachers to provide
educationally sound, fun, action-oriented, experiential curriculum to enhance
the children's learning. Mary Oden, our Youth Educational Assistant (YEA), works closely with this program,
which began in 1997.

The Putnam County Schools have been working with
the "Hatching Chicks in the Classroom"
school enrichment project.Children observe the hatching of the chicks in an incubator
provided by the Putnam County Extension Council. They learn about the development of the
egg, hatching, and post-hatch care of the baby chicks. It helps teach them several skills.
The picture at the left is the Head Start class while the ones at the top are from the 1st
grade from a couple of years ago. |
The 4-H School Enrichment
Program has many other projects (curriculum) that can be used in schools as well. All of
these are designed to be worked into the regular class time and lessons. They also teach
children useful skills. Other projects that are available as part of this include:
| Observation Earth: explores soils,
seeds, and plants. |
|
Magic School Bus: written to go
along with PBS's series on science. |
|
Household Hazardous Waste Mgt:
this discusses all the issues surrounding the use and disposal of household products.
|
Talking with TJ:
teaches kids to get along and work together. |
|
Bacteriology:
unit studies sanitation and shows kids bacterial growth. |
|
Blue Skies Below my Feet:
a study of gravity, fiber, fabrics, and nutrition. A science program. |
There are
a couple of others that are more detailed. If you are interested in more information about
any of these, please contact the Putnam County University of Missouri Extension Office at
