MaltreatmentThe Maltreatment and Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting Program (MAPPP) builds community awareness about the prevalence of violence in the lives of young women.

MAPPP has been field-tested and evaluated in community and workshop presentations by the Center on Adolescent Sexuality, Pregnancy and Parenting at the University of Missouri.

The MAPPP materials include.

  • Video
    • A Dateline NBC video describing the life of a survivor of childhood sexual abuse
  • Manual
    • An annotated bibliography of over 70 research studies related to maltreatment prior to and during adolescent pregnancy, as well as the maltreatment of children of adolescent mothers
    • A description of the issues surrounding the definition of maltreatment
    • Materials to use in presentations about these issues, including:
      • Camera-ready reproducible masters for overhead transparencies
      • "Talking Points" that fully describe each master
      • Suggested formats for presentations of different lengths (i.e., one hour, half-day, full day)
    • Activities to assist community groups in addressing the issue of maltreatment
    • An overview of legal issues that must be considered when working with maltreated adolescents
    • Practical resources related to maltreatment and adolescent pregnancy and parenting including websites, popular media, and videos
  • Activity supplement:
    • The activities are based on the development of critical thinking skills using a practical problem solving framework

The MAPPP Satellite Conference was held Sept. 19, 2002. The 2-hour video of the entire satellite broadcast includes

  • The basics of the MAPPP project
  • Personal testimonies by parenting teens about maltreatment
  • Insightful interviews with Native Americans, Latinos, Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders and practitioners working with these groups about the role of culture in maltreatment
  • Presentations by an adult survivor of sexual abuse who was also a teen mom, as well as presentations by an expert in child maltreatment and Vietnamese and Amerasian culture, and the creator of the MAPPP project.

Each video includes closed captioning for hearing-impared viewers. You can view closed captions if you have the necessary equipment.
