Storing Food in the Refrigerator
Fresh fruits
Storage recommendations are for 37 degrees Fahrenheit
Bananas
- Refrigerate only when fully ripe
- Skin will darken
Apples
- Discard bruised or decayed fruit
- Don't wash before storing because moisture encourages spoilage
- Store in crisper or moisture-resistant bag or wrap
1 to 3 weeks
Berries, cherries
- Discard bruised or decayed fruit
- Don't wash before storing because moisture encourages spoilage
- Store in crisper or moisture-resistant bag or wrap
1 to 2 days
Citrus fruit
- Wrap cut surfaces to prevent vitamin C loss
- Discard bruised or decayed fruit
- Don't wash before storing because moisture encourages spoilage
- Store in crisper or moisture-resistant bag or wrap
3 weeks
Juices, canned, bottled or frozen reconstituted
- Keep fruit juice tightly covered
- Transfer canned juice to glass or plastic container when opened
- Do not store in cans
6 days
Melons
- Wrap cut surfaces of cantaloupe to prevent vitamin C loss
- Wrap uncut cantaloupe and honeydew to prevent odor spreading to other foods
