Practical Weed Science for the Field Scout: Corn and Soybeans
Foxtail, yellow (Setaria pumila)
Summer annual grass
A clump-forming summer annual with a seedhead that resembles a fox's tail. Seedlings have leaf sheaths that are mostly without hairs, but with a few long silky hairs on the upper surface near the leaf base only. Mature plants have stems that are erect, flattened, hairless, reaching 3 feet in height. Stems often have a reddish tint at the base. Leaves may reach 12 inches in length and 7 to 12 mm in width, and have long silky hairs at the leaf bases. Auricles are absent and the ligule is a fringe of hairs reaching 2 mm in length. The seedhead is a cylindrical bristly panicle, reaching 6 inches in length and 1/3 to 2/3 inch in width. Bristles on the seedhead turn yellow at maturity, giving the plant its name.
