Public policy education is a MU Extension program that applies the knowledge of the University to public issues and educates citizens to enable them to make better-informed policy choices. The subject of this publication is MU Extension's opportunity, or obligation, to educate the public on the major public policy issues of the day. The philosophical basis for Extension is briefly reviewed. Some organizational issues — prerequisites for successful involvement — are explored. The publication discusses questions of what issues to choose, when to teach, whom to teach and how to teach. The purpose of the publication is to stimulate thought and discussion on the opportunities and pitfalls inherent in public policy education and some of the practical issues involved in conducting policy education programs.
