Reuse or eliminate plastic
trash can liners in guest rooms.
Instead of automatically
providing giveaway toiletry items such as soap,
shampoo, shower cap, toothbrush, and toothpaste,
post a sign in the room that states they are
available upon request.
Make an effort to get off
junk mailing lists. Junkbusters
web site can give you some tips.
Use xeriscape landscaping.
Xeriscape landscaping is based on planning and
design, soil analysis, appropriate plant selection,
practical turf areas, efficient irrigation, use of
mulches, and appropriate maintenance. To learn

or contact your county extension service or local
garden/nursery centers. conserves water decreases
energy use because less pumping and treatment of
water is required reduces building heating and
cooling costs because of placement of trees and
plants minimizes stormwater and irrigation
runoff
Install energy-efficient

and reduce energy usage improve comfort levels and
lighting quality reduce creation of air
pollutants
Install efficient-flow shower
heads, low-flush toilets, and faucet aerators. To

call (202)260-7288. reduce volume of water used and
purchase costs avoid wastewater treatment costs and
energy for heating water
Purchase high quality,
durable equipment with good service
contracts.
Install refillable soap,
shampoo, and lotion dispensers in guest
bathrooms
Consider carpet made of
recycled plastic.
Replace single-use food
service supplies (cups, plates, bowls, forks,
spoons, knives, napkins, etc.) with reusable ones.
Replace plastic cups with durable water glasses in
guest rooms.
Purchase reusable cloth
coffee filters.
Replace single-serving
breakfast cereal boxes with larger bulk
dispensers.Use bulk dispensers for condiments and
serve in small dishes for room service. Use cream
pitchers, sugar pourers, and jelly servers rather
than individual packets.
Use chips or coins instead of
disposable paper tickets for coat checking and auto
parking.
Use less hazardous cleaning
supplies and laundry detergents.
Use rechargeable
batteries.
Offer optional linen and
towel reuse in guest rooms. Post signs in rooms
asking guests to consider using their towels and
linens more than once. Let your guests know that
this will help the environment by reducing water
and energy usage and reducing soap residues in our
waterways. The"Green"
Hotels Association®
sells these cards and has devoted itself to
researching other water and energy saving
ideas.
Provide a video segment on
the in-room hotel/motel channel that highlights
your pollution prevention efforts. improve company
image
Develop an in-house recycling
program. Place recycling containers where they are
conveniently located for guest use (in guest rooms,
next to soda machines, etc.) Recycle cardboard
packaging and pallets or arrange with your supplier
to reuse them. Recycle newspapers, office paper,
and telephone directories. Recycle plastic, glass,
and aluminum from restaurant, bar areas, and guest
rooms.
Donate banquet leftovers to
homeless shelters or other charitable
organizations.
Grind up food scraps from
restaurant in food mulchers and give or sell to
farmers for composting or compost on-site. For more

Reduce landscaping wastes by
mulching/chipping grass clippings, branches, and
downed trees use mulch in flower beds or spread
along trails
Donate used soap, bottled
shampoo, linens, blankets, mattresses, furnishings,
carpet, and equipment to charitable organizations
such as homeless shelters
Recycle stained tablecloths
and napkins - they can be reused as napkins,
aprons, cleaning rags and even neckties!
Reuse old sheets as cloth
laundry bags.
