Basic soil testing analyzes nutrient content and fertility status. Results include fertilizer and lime recommendations. Additional tests are available for nutrient management plans, environmental issues, potting mixes, compost, manure and water usage. Each sample should contain about 1½ cups of dry soil from 6 to 7 inches deep. Consult our soil testing publications for specific instructions. Results are typically provided within two weeks.
Canner gauge tests
Testing for dial-type pressure canner lids is available. Dial-type gauges should be tested annually to ensure accuracy and prevent bacterial contamination of preserved foods. (Testing is not necessary for weighted gauges.)
Most canner brands with the exception of All American may be tested.
Cost is $3 per lid.
Private pesticide applicator training
MU Extension provides private pesticide applicator training for producers as required for Missouri Department of Agriculture certification. Individuals must purchase or bring a copy of MU Extension publication M87, Private Pesticide Applicator Reference Manual, to the training. Manuals may be purchased at the extension center.
Cost of manual is $12. Training requires 2.5 hours.

MU Extension proctors tests for students enrolled in Mizzou Online courses.
Distance education test proctoring is available for students enrolled at any eligible institution. Please call ahead to schedule a time to take your test.

Other services include chemical analyses of foods, feeds, fertilizers and water.
Water testing is available at our location.
Water test kits are available for free pickup. The kits contain a sample bottle ready for use, sample information form, collection instructions and return address label. The sample information form must be filled out completely and the date and time of water sample collection recorded for the lab to process the sample. Sample volume must be at least 100 ml (line on the bottle). Water samples should be taken to the local county health office on the same day as collection for pickup.
A $10 fee will be billed to the customer from the state lab following the processing of the sample.
Soil and Hay probes are available for loan from our county office.
We charge a $20 refundable fee for each probe.
