Format:
Curriculum
Language:
Spanish
Target
Audience:
Parents in a group led by a facilitator
Description:
This is the
Spanish version of the Active Parenting Today curriculum.
It is not dubbed or subtitled. It
features video with Latino actors. A
Spanish-speaking advisory board and Spanish-speaking parents assisted in the
making of this curriculum. It
addresses concerns unique to Spanish-speaking parents, including how parenting
practices must fit the society for which they are raising their children; the
presence of the extended family in the home; encouraging daughters as well as
sons to succeed; and the importance of learning the language of the land.
Padres
Activos de Hoy is designed for three sessions lasting 2 hours
each, but it may be altered to fit different needs.
Reviewers’ Comments:
Very well made with major cultural emphasis for Latinos by Latinos. Examples very relevant. Doesn’t just give instructions; instead, gives solutions.
Addresses immigrant, generational, and gender influences on discipline in a very positive manner.
Focuses on family enrichment, cooperation, appropriate parenting.
The host himself is an authority figure, which makes him believable. Also, the actors are easy to relate to and easy to understand.
Encourages and introduces change in a very non-intrusive, culturally relevant fashion.
The vignettes in the video feature a father, a single parent, grandparents, and women caregivers.
In the Latino tradition [the video] introduces conflicting parenting issues with a story.
Does mention corporal punishment, but quickly follows with very viable, attainable alternatives.
Definitely encourages respect for ethnic values, tradition.
Varied, though culturally relevant, family structure.
More male presence would be better.
Very good situational vignettes.
Encourages family unity and the importance of family from past generations.
Does suggest a problem-solving approach, many different situations, and solutions for all. Great to have parent watch and imitate.
A few pluses: New American focus (immigrant.) Good examples, vignettes, illustrations in Spanish. Cultural examples very good.
Does address the importance of learning language of the country, or learning it together and practicing it together.
The video host is wordy, but gets moving later into the video.
A LOT of good examples in the vignettes to encourage modeling. Examples are relevant to the language and culture.
The parent and facilitator handbooks are both good, easy to follow books that follow the video closely.
You could actually do the videos without the facilitator and still be effective - not as, but close.
Very frank, the guide for leaders is clear, with many examples. Role-playing is very effective.
