A Guide to Parenting Education Resources 
for Hispanic/Latino Families 

Advisory Group and Reviewers

Dolores Arce-Kaptain is the Director of the Alianzas Program, a collaborative effort of the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension, University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) and the UMKC Institute for Human Development.  Previous to this job, she served as Coordinator of the Maternal and Child Health Coalition of Greater Kansas City.  She has also held staff appointments at the UMKC School of Medicine, the UMKC Institute for Human Development, and the School of Graduate Studies at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas.  She was born and raised in Mexico City and has been living in the United States since 1989.  While living in Mexico City, Ms. Arce-Kaptain was employed by the United States Information Service at the United States Embassy.  She is a graduate of the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences. 

Anna Maria Bellatin, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist.  She serves as the Clinical Director of the Mattie Rhodes Counseling and Art Center, a mental health, social service, and art education agency in Kansas City, Missouri.  Mattie Rhodes serves primarily a Latino population.  Dr. Bellatin is a member of the ParentLink Coalition and participated as a reviewer for ParentLink's The Guide to Choosing Hispanic/Latino American Parenting Curricula in 1994.

Eduardo Crespi, RN, is the director of El Centro Latino in Columbia, Missouri.  El Centro provides health, education, and cultural awareness services for Latino newcomers to central Missouri as well as for any resident of the Columbia area.  Originally from Argentina, Mr. Crespi has been in the United States for ten years. 

Linda M. Espinosa, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia.  She completed her B.A. at the University of Washington, her Ed.M. at Harvard University, and her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Chicago.  Her research has focused on bilingual preschool education, Hispanic families and children, the effectiveness of family support programs, and early literacy for non-English speakers.  Dr. Espinosa serves as a member of the Head Start Technical Work Group on Child Outcomes, a consulting editor and book editor for the Early Childhood Research Quarterly, and on the editorial board of The Prevention Researcher.  Currently she is working on a school improvement project in inner city St. Louis.  Dr. Espinosa participated as a reviewer for ParentLink's The Guide to Choosing Hispanic/Latino American Parenting Curricula in 1994.

Iberty Gedeon is a Marriage and Family Therapist with Mattie Rhodes Counseling and Art Center in Kansas City, Missouri.  She provides individual and family counseling in addition to community outreach and activities related to the enhancement of children, youth, and their families.  She graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2000 with an M.A. in Counseling and Guidance.  Ms. Gedeon is originally from Panama and came to the U.S. on a Fulbright Scholarship to finish a Bachelor's degree in Psychology.  Since then she has grown to honor and appreciate her heritage as a Latin mother, wife, and professional counselor living in a multicultural world.  

Maria Gutierrez, Ph.D., is an adjunct professor in the College of Education, Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia.  She is a licensed psychologist with a specialty in child psychology.  Dr. Gutierrez was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and raised in Chicago.  She has worked with Latino families in California and Boston.

Sharon Lee, RNCS, FNP, CNM, is US-born, and speaks Spanish as a second language.  She has a Master's degree in nursing.  Ms. Lee works as the supervisor and coordinator of lay home visitors in the Latino immigrant community of Columbia/Boone County, Missouri, through the local health department.

Yolanda Lorge is president of Grupo Latinoamericano in Springfield, Missouri.  She is a representative for the Southwest Alliance of the Minority Health Advisory Board for the Missouri Department of Health.  She serves as a community mobilizer for Ozarks Fighting Back, a United Way agency, working for the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse in the Hispanic community.  Ms. Lorge also serves on Alianzas, a coalition of Hispanic/Latino organizations and agencies working toward the betterment of the Hispanic/Latino community.  Ms. Lorge participated as a reviewer for ParentLink's The Guide to Choosing Hispanic/Latino American Parenting Curricula in 1994.  She is originally from Mexico, and has been in the United States for thirty years.

Alicia Lamberghini-West is a licensed psychologist in the state of Missouri who came to the U.S. from Argentina.  She was the Psychology Chief of the National Programs in Psychiatric Rehabilitation / Sheltered Workshops for thirteen years.  Dr. Lamberghini-West taught courses for the National Mental Health Direction of Argentina and for Psychiatric Specialists at the Medical School of Buenos Aires University.  Her education includes a B.S. in Psychology, a Doctor of Psychology, and a Clinical Psychology Specialization.  She has 20 years experience as a clinical psychologist and counselor.

Melody K. Schiaffino was born in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, and grew up in Springfield, Missouri.  She currently works as an intern at the Boone County/ Columbia Health Department, doing demographics analysis and Latino community outreach.  She also serves as an HIV/STD education assistant and provides Spanish/English interpreter services as needed within the health department.  Ms. Schiaffino has B.A. degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies and Spanish from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Christine Sheriff, M.Ed. is the Information Services Coordinator for ParentLink, where she has worked for the past 8 years.  She has coordinated previous reviews of parenting education materials for ParentLink, including reviews of materials for parents of children with special health care needs in 1998, for parents of adolescents in 1999, and for never-married fathers in 2001.
