Lawn Weeds and Their Control

Editor's note
The following abstract describes a publication that is only available for purchase. A link to ordering information is on this page.

North Central Regional Publication
Originally developed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, this publication has been adapted for Missouri

This publication is a reference guide to the three most important aspects of weed control: identifying the weeds in your lawn, choosing the correct herbicide and applying it properly.

About 50 common weeds are identified by full-color pictures, common and botanical name and growing season. A short paragraph provides information on weed characteristics such as shape of stem, growth habits and color.

Choosing the correct herbicide requires a knowledge of types of weeds. Cool season and warm season, annuals and biennials, grasses and broadleaves are discussed. A list of approved herbicides for each type is provided. A quick-reference chart in the back shows the growth period for each weed, gives suggestions for pre-emergence or post-emergence treatment, and lists the two herbicides most recommended to control each weed.

A section on management suggests ways to help prevent weeds through mowing, watering, feeding programs and seed and sod.
